As Scottish Qualifications Authority results are released today, UCAS confirms that about 34,750 students have found their university place. This shows a 1% increase from last year’s scores of 34,620 in spite of a decrease in 18-year-old Scottish population. The entry rate of young individuals pursuing higher education is up by 21.7%, the highest in recent years. These statistics comprise full-time undergraduate students in most colleges and unis in the UK However, they do not cover most further education colleges in Scotland.
SQA results day is a significant statistical guide as a large majority of Scottish applicants get placed today. More than 5,000 Scottish applicants are expected to be placed in the UK institutions in the coming weeks.
Checking SQA Results and Using Clearing
For applicants to check if they have been accepted or eligible for Clearing, they need to sign in to Track. High results for their chosen course means a place confirmation. If not, they need to use the Clearing option and personally call the institutions for available courses. Although it may sound disappointing, there will be as plenty as 40,000 courses to choose from. Over 1,770 Scottish students were able to secure a place through this option in 2016.
UCAS Chief Executive Clare Marchant said: “Well done to all those students who have worked so hard to get their results and secure their place at university or college.” For those who have not received results they hoped for, she advised them not to worry. She added: “Take some time to think about what you want to do next, and seek advice from those who know you best – parents, teachers, and friends. You have plenty of options.”
UCAS provides advice and how-to videos on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Skills Development Scotland (SDS) also ensures that applicants received support and advice through a helpline. Experienced careers advisers can offer personal support and help with regard to options such as courses, volunteering, apprenticeship, or employment. The helpline will be open from 9th to 16th August.
