In a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron, a group of 68 senior education experts composed of chancellors, governors and university presidents warned that British universities could lose out on around £8bn in annual tuition fees generated from one in 10 foreign students who study outside their home country, with the figure expected to more than double by 2025. Strict immigration policies on student visas could result to foreign students going elsewhere to study, the letter states.
Home Office ministers have previously introduced policies meant to reduce the 400,000 overseas students who come to UK universities each year to study. The policies are aimed to reduce annual net migration to the tens of thousands. In the letter, signatories urged the government to class foreign students as temporary instead of permanent migrants and have them taken out of net immigration counts.
In response, immigration minister Damian Green said that the revisions on immigration policy were not meant to stop genuine students from entering the UK. Instead, the government intends to prevent the abuse of student visas as part of plans to lower net migration down to levels below 100,000. Green said: “When we announced our full raft of changes to the student visa route, Universities UK said that the proposals ‘will allow British universities to remain at the forefront of international student recruitment’. Public confidence in statistics will not be enhanced by revising the way the net migration numbers are presented by removing students.”
