On 2 April 2012 officials in the city of Limerick, Republic of Ireland publicly conveyed their invitation to university students in Merseyside to study at their higher education institutions.
Official figures saw a 27% increase in the number of applications from UK students to study in the Republic. This move is seen as a way to escape the looming rise of university tuition fees which will have most higher education institutions in the UK—Liverpool’s three universities included—charging the maximum £9,000 or a figure close to it starting this September.
In contrast to the steep tuition fees in the UK, the Republic of Ireland abolished its tuition fees for full-time degree students starting 1996. EU students still enjoy a huge advantage, paying only a signing fee of around £2,000. Transportation back home is not a problem as the Shannon airport is just an hour’s flight from Liverpool.
Officials at the Limerick Institute of Technology predict that Liverpool students would be amongst those who will be applying for the 500 places it has earmarked for EU students because the city has already established a connection with Liverpool.
