The beginning of August means summer is over in Scotland. Most schools will start their autumn term on the second week of August. Now is a great time to start your preparations and avoid making adjustments at the last minute.
Preparing for Autumn Term
One of most effective things you can do to prepare for autumn term is to check your upcoming courses. This does not mean frantically studying like you have an exam. Relax; the term has not even begun yet. The purpose of this is simply getting familiar with the course outline. Course outlines are typically posted on your uni’s website. Knowing about your course will give you an idea how demanding it will be. There are courses that are more challenging than others. Some outlines would include descriptions about the tests, assignments or projects that will be required from you.
Look into the required textbooks and supplementary materials for your courses. You don’t necessarily have to buy them, as they may be available in your library. However, contemplate which books are worth purchasing because owning a book for a very demanding course is definitely a plus.
To be able to ease your way back into school, start fixing your schedule. Classes will be starting soon so it is time to wake up early again. Set your alarm earlier so you do you won’t feel dazed on your first day of class. When you’re already used to waking up early, you can be focused during your classes. Of course, you also need to start sleeping early so you won’t feel and look exhausted.
Setting Goals for Autumn Term
The best advice we can give you in starting autumn term is setting goals. Make sure you apply the SMART criteria in setting goals. They should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. Do away with goals that sound too vague like “getting good grades.” Instead, pick the realistic yet attainable grades you want to receive. Always have a clear direction so if you get distracted or over-fatigued, there is something that can keep you going.
Aside from your grades, there are other goals you can set. If you wish to lose weight or get physically stronger, include going to the gym to your schedule. Are you aiming for an amazing internship next semester or applying at a respectable company soon? Do something about it now. Create an outstanding resume/CV and an impressive cover letter.
