Do you ever wonder why clean-cut men suddenly grow their mustache for the entire month of November? These guys may be participating in an initiative that raises funds and awareness on men’s health called Movember.
What is Movember?
Movember is actually a portmanteau or clever blend of English-Australian shortened word for mustache, “mo” and November. It is a global movement, which is simply known as “No-shave November” in other countries. Its main causes include awareness for prostate and testicular cancer, as well as mental health and suicide prevention among men. The mustache is meant to represent a ribbon for men’s health.
This movement started in Melbourne, Australia 10 years ago when a group of 30 guys revived a moustache trend. After having fun doing it, they started raising money and awareness for prostate cancer the next year. The cause became bigger in 2004 with 450 participants and they raised about £25,000. By 2012, over 20 countries have taken part in this full-fledged annual event that have raised millions. The Movember Foundation and other men’s health partners in every country conduct the respective programmes.
According to the Movember Foundation, it is the only charity that focuses on men’s health on a worldwide scale, year round. Its ultimate goal is stop men from dying too young. Participants refer to themselves as Mo Bros. They should begin with a clean-shaven face upon registration and have the entire month to grow and groom their mustache. As part of their rules, they should only grow their mustaches and no beards are allowed. This means that sideburns must not connect with their beard. They are also not allowed to join their chins to their handlebars.
