It is summer graduation season in the UK once again. Students, from teenagers in secondary school, young adults taking up a bachelor’s degree, to grownups finishing up graduate school, could not wait to walk solemnly toward the stage to receive their hard-earned diplomas.
Importance of Graduation
Every student yearns of walking up the stage to receive his diploma in front of his family and friends. Graduation ceremonies are esteemed rituals in educational institutions around the world. When we talk about graduation rites, graduation robes with mortarboards, speeches, and diplomas easily come to mind. However, the importance of this event goes beyond these things. Graduation Honouraries
St Andrews University has recognised three scientists who were former students for their exceptional work in their summer graduation ceremony: (1) Professor Rita Colwell, for her polar research and bacterium research that has been helpful in the fight against cholera; (2) Professor Jean Beggs, who studied the splicing machinery in yeast with insightful implications on our understanding of higher organisms; and (3) Professor John Dudley, whose research focused on the interface between applied optics and the fundamental understanding of light.
The University of Dundee has honoured Amanda Kopel of Kirriemuir as she has been campaigning for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia will have better rights. Her husband Scottish football star and Dundee alum Frank Kopel, who suffered from dementia, inspired this campaign. The University of Dundee has also included Snow Patrol vocalist Gary Lightbody to the hounorary list. However, due to illness, the popular musician would not be able to fly to the UK in time for the ceremonies.
Professor John Coyne, a former vice-chancellor of the University of Derby, will receive a honourary doctorate during the uni’s summer graduation ceremonies in July. He has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.
