Though mothers usually get more credit in raising kids, dads play an equally important role in shaping the lives of children. Origins
How exactly did this celebration come to be? There are numerous interesting stories regarding the origin of Father’s Day. Some suggest that the concept of Father’s Day may have come from pagan sun worship. The sun is considered the father of the universe in some groups of paganism. The two are being linked together since the summer solstice transpires around the same time of year as Father’s Day.
One of the first identifiable efforts to honour fathers was in July 1908 in West Virginia after hundreds of dads passed away in a mine disaster. The first official celebration of Father’s Day began in the US. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane Washington was inspired to dedicate a particular day for fathers after listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having reflected on the selflessness of her own father William Jackson Smart, she felt that dads should also be honoured.
